I got up to another one of those days when the weather could not make up its mind whether to rain or clear up. There was a very heavy fog which surrounded us making me feel damp.
I jumped into the shower and the hot water felt good. How was I to know that I turned on a change of events by taking the shower because thirty minutes later, steaming hot water started pouring out of the unit just as it had before. There was nothing else for it but to turn everything off again and wait for James to show up.
We went out walking as we usually do on a damp and cloudy day but only covered about a half mile.
As it happens, both Gary and Daniel stopped by and took a look but were unable to find a solution to the problem. Daniel said he would call James again and explain what was happening and for him to stop by.
In the meantime, we have water of the cold variety as both hot water units, gas and electricity are shut off.
I was sitting outside talking to Gary and Delores stopped by. The three of us sat there shooting the breeze mainly talking about Delores Grandkids which she obviously thinks the world of. Gary had some interesting stories of his Grandkids as well. Me? I just kept my mind and my mouth shut as if I had any, I have yet to meet them. Then again, I am not much of a family man, and any that I have are in England along with my two sons and a daughter who has disowned me and stepson who, although we never really knew each other, made a huge success of his life by becoming a doctor. I also have a stepdaughter in New York State who is the only one that stays in touch, except for the two boys who are in England.
Eventually Gary and Delores went on their way, and I went back indoors to finish the breakfast that I had started before the excitement of the overheating water unit.
With everybody gone about their business, I went back to working on the blog only now, I had something to write about. Not that water heaters are a very interesting subject, but they are a necessity, at least in my life. Normally, one takes hot water for granted until things do not work properly. RV’ers are much more aware of these sorts of things for obvious reasons and because we live in RV’s, the units are much more susceptible to things going wrong.
I happened to glance up at the clock which hangs right in front of me and to my surprise, it registered at almost 3:00 pm. I have no idea where today has gone but it has flown by.
We harnessed up to go walking and wandered around but at the same time, heading in the general direction of the office so I could check my mailbox. I was expecting a delivery, but it was not in my mailbox.
We carried on walking all the way to Hwy 290 but there was nothing to see on either side of us in the way of animals. As we were in it for the exercise, not having any animals to look at was only a minor disappointment. Altogether, we covered 1.2 miles for the day, which seems to be our standard lately.
Back at the RV, there was a knock on the door and Daniel was there waving a package at me. I went out to get it from him thanking him profusely for the delivery. This package was the one I was expecting and held new rubber treads for my walking stick. Hope they fit but we will see.
I went back to working on the blog and by now, it was already 5:00 pm. I have no idea where the day had gone. Outside it had clouded over, again although rain was not forecast until later this evening. I also spent time cleaning out two of the bird feeders as the moisture had congealed the seed in the openings making it difficult for the birds to work on.
The package has two new rubber feet for my walking stick. It has a strange system because the single rubber foot just slips over the end of the stick. Nothing strange about that except how they measure the things. I ordered half inch rubber thingy’s and when they arrived, they measured ¾ of an inch which was too big for the pole. Incidentally, it said half inch on the package.
I thought about it for a bit and then figured a way out. First, I pulled off the old original rubber tread which was worn through on the bottom and I cut that part off and then put it back on the stick. It was a tight fit which should make my plan work. I took the new and slightly larger tread and slipped the whole thing over the old unit. It fitted perfectly and as all of the pressure is downwards, should work fine. If it does give me trouble, I could glue it, but I don’t want to do that, as I will have to do the whole process over as the treads wear out.
Incidentally, the whole thing is a strange system. On the bottom of the walking pole there is a flat metal circle the size of the pole that has a piece that sticks out and I suppose protects the wooden pole from ground contact. It may do that but it sure as heck wears the rubber treads out quickly as they fit over top of this unit. What do I know…
With the pole fixed at least as well as I could, we had to go out and try it. We wandered around for a bit but did not go very far as the weather was not very inviting, but we did cover 1.8 miles for the day.
Back at The Caboose, we sat outside until it got dark and then I brought in the feeders and then the dogs for the evening meal. The rest of the evening was spent watching TV and the show was good enough that it was 12:00 midnight before I turned it off and went to bed.
