My 88th Birthday.
I woke up early. In fact, several times before it was time to get up and at ’em as I had the upcoming breakfast in the commons to celebrate my birthday and I did not want to be late for my own party. I crawled out of bed and threw on some clothes and we went out walking as we usually do. It was a bit nippy outside and so I made sure to dress warmly although I could not find a single pair of the gloves of the three, I have just bought.
We wandered around and the wind still had a bite to it, and we did not stay out long but we almost covered a mile. I put the dogs back in the RV and then wandered over to the Commons to grab some breakfast. The usual gang was there, and I got a lot of hugs and kisses from the ladies as they wished me a Very Happy 88th birthday. We sat and ate and laughed and joked about everything and it was a perfect start to the day. I was very glad that Daniel didn’t make a big deal out of it as I was sort of expecting something to happen.
The party broke up and I wandered back to The Caboose and settled down to write in the blog. I got more attention on my return from my furry buddies who were very pleased to see me even though I had only been gone for an hour.
Mikey sat on my lap as he likes to do while I write although, after a while, I make him get back in his own chair as he makes my legs ache caused by squeezing them together to make that lap for him. Sandy is not much of a lap dog but has her moments which she chooses.
I caught up with the writing and turned my attention to straightening out a couple of drawers, the ones in the sink cabinet as they were both a jumbled mess plus, the roaches had made a home in them. I had already taken care of the roaches but still needed to clean up their mess. While I was at it, I came across some money I had absent mindedly put in one of the drawers, nearly $650.00 in fact, which made it a very nice way to start the day. Incidentally, I had forgotten that I had salted the money away in that draw, out of site and out of mind sort of thing. I wonder if I have any more put away somewhere else for safe keeping????
With that out of the way, I looked around for other things to get up to and made the mistake of turning on my computer to listening and watching 2 Cellos perform. Those two are absolutely amazing with the music they produce plus the fact that they get so involved themselves. It wasn’t long and the tears were flowing as I listened to their wonderful sound. I decided that I should listen to something else that did not affect me so much and listened to and watched another group playing classical music that eventually became an entire orchestra. No good, as the tears flowed anyway.
So, I turned the computer off and reminded myself that I am an old man and any tears I shed now are probably wasted.
My step daughter from my last marriage called me. She still lives in New York State in the town we first moved to when we came over here from England. She said it was 14 degrees there. One of the reasons I left that State. I could not stand the winters. The very first night we landed after getting off the Queen Mary in New York Harbor, we had 14 inches of wet snow causing us to question the wisdom of our move. That was back in 1967 and there has been a lot of snow since which is why I moved to Texas.
The afternoon sped by as it is wont to do. We got in another walk and just wandered around visiting our mailbox along the way just in case there was a letter or something. I have nearly all of the forwarding addresses changed with the exception of a couple or so and I am working on them. Then, I can cancel the mailbox.
On the way, I passed Jeff and Terri’s RV, and they were sitting outside with their daughter Cheryl and hollered at me to come over. The dogs made a beeline for more attention, and I followed them although I was just going to chat. A beer was thrust into my hands, and I spent the next 15 minutes talking to them. Knowing that I had a later engagement, I bid my farewell and walked back to The Caboose.
I got a phone call from Delores telling me it was time to eat and to come over to the Breakroom. I wandered over and was not thinking as I opened the door only to be greeted by an off key rendition of “Happy Birthday”. Everyone from our group was there and I got a lot of hugs and kisses and handshakes from the guys. Except Daniel that is, and he made a big deal out of kissing me on the cheek. All in good fun, of course. Well, I hope it was!
We chatted for a bit, and I opened the birthday cards signed by all present. Delores had bought me a bottle of wine that was much older and more expensive than the cheap stuff I usually drink, and I also had a gift certificate to use. Then it was time to eat, and they had made a special effort to make a roast along with potatoes and gravy, English style which I thoroughly enjoyed.
We sat around talking for some time, but I managed to restrict my drinking to just a single beer. This group of individuals are from all walks of life, but all are over 60 and most 65 plus. I am probably the oldest guy in the park.
The evening passed as time is wont to do and eventually, we all made our ways back to our individual RV’s but not before I thanked them for their kindness and great hospitality. After watching movies that made me cry earlier in the day, I had to be careful that I did not make a complete idiot of myself and start blubbering.
I made my way back to The Caboose where the excited little dogs jumped all over me and then settled down to watch television after I fed them. Well, I watched TV and they both crowded onto my lap for attention.
And so ended another day, made special by having such caring and thoughtful friends. Happy Birthday indeed.
